Grayson Highlands 10-14-22

I went to Grayson Highlands recently on a field trip with my high school students to go bouldering. It was a fun time and a neat experience (yes, I tried bouldering), but we didn’t get to hike at all or really enjoy all the beautiful leaves/views that the park has to offer, so I went back a few days later when I had a free day. It was my first solo hiking adventure in over 4 years, and I thoroughly enjoyed the peace, quiet, and exploration!

I had been to Grayson before, but had only ever hiked around Massie Gap because that is where you are most likely to see the wild ponies, and I always wanted to try to spot them. However, there are many other trails at the park, so this time I decided I would explore trails I had never seen before. I hiked 3 different trails, each 1.5-2 miles long. My favorite was the Cabin Creek Trail, because it had a series of gorgeous waterfalls along it. I ate my lunch next to one of the falls, and could have just sat there enjoying the sound of the water for the rest of the day! It was so peaceful.

It’s not a true solo photo adventure without lots of selfie photo opportunities…

I got to enjoy this and similar views from various different summits in the park. Definitely the height of fall color for this year!
